This cactus is found along the Western coast of Baja California, Mexico, and adjacent islands. Identification: These plants form multiply branched clumps or mounds up to 1′ (40 cm) high and 6½′ (2 m) around. The stems are cylinder-shaped, up to 12″ (30 cm) high and 1-2½″ (3-7 cm) around. Each stem has 8-10 ribs, sporting spines that are bright red at first, fading eventually to gray or white. Spine groups contain 7-10 spines, ½-2″ (1.5-6 cm) long. Bright yellow funnel-shaped flowers are up to 2″ (6 cm) in size. Round red fruits are covered with spines. References:
