The Soprano Lilac Spoon is a hybrid of Osteospermum, a genus related to sunflowers and
commonly known as
African daisies. (Osteospermum means "bone seed.") It is a cultivar, not found in the wild,
derived from Osteospermum ecklonis.
Identification: Most African daises resemble
their North American counterparts, but a few cultivars, like this one, have unique spoon-shaped
petals. Plants are 9-10″ (24-26 cm) high and ~1′ (35-40 cm) around. Flowers are 1¾-2″ (5-5.5 cm) in diameter, purple with blue centers, blooming early.
The spoon-shaped flower petals are unique to only a few cultivars.
