Leaves: New leaves and stems are bronze to copper to bright red, darkening to a glossy dark green. Leaves are leathery, elliptic to oval, with finely serrated margins, 4-8" (10-20 cm). Flowers: Flowers are white, ¼" (8.4 mm), in panicles up to 5-6" (12-15 cm) long. They appear in late April, and smell unpleasant. Fruits: Red berries that persist through the winter.
