About plant names...

Viburnum plicatum and Viburnum plicatum var. tomentosum were previously considered separate species. They differed only in that V. plicatum flowered 2-3 weeks after V. plicatum var. tomentosum, and with sterile flowers rather than both sterile and fertile flowers. These are now believed to be the same species, and the 'Mariesii' cultivar described here should really be named Viburnum plicatum 'Mariesii.' If you're, you know, keeping track.

Identification: These shrubs are 8-10′ (2.4-3 m) tall and usually somewhat wider than they are tall, and densely branched. Bark is gray-brown with orange lenticels. Leaves are roughly oval-shaped, rounded at the bottom and pointed at the top, 2-4″ (5-10 cm) long and 1¼-2″ (3.2-5 cm) wide, with serrated leaf edges. In the fall, leaves are dark reddish purple. Flowers are white, up to 4″ (10 cm) in diameter, in the form of flat flowerheads, with an outer ring of infertile flowers about ½″ (1.3 cm) around and an interior region filled with ⅛″ (3.2 mm) fertile flowers. Berries are egg-shaped, red, ripening to black.

The 'Mariesii' cultivar is "an old, large-growing (to 10′ (3 m) tall) selection of var. tomentosum, this plant has distinctly layered horizontal branches that serve as a good stage for the large, white sterile blooms that are raised on longer stems. Fruit set can be very good and the foliage may turn a deep red in fall."[1]
