Red torch cactus, Argentine hedgehog

Red torch cactus is native to northern Argentina, and is not found in the wild in North America.

Plants: These occur in low clumps as high as 3′ (1 m), with cylindrical stems 1½–1¾″ (4–5 cm) in diameter. Each stem has 14-17 ribs, with thin spines ½–2½″ (1.5–7 cm) long. Spines are between yellow and brown in color.

Flowers: Large flowers, up to 2½″ (7 cm) in diameter and 4″ (10 cm) deep, are red, pink, yellow, or orange.

Fruits: Yellow.

Habitats: Originates from the Monte shrubland and Gran Chaco forest within northern Argentina, Catamarca and La Rioja. It is found at elevations of 2953–6562′ (900–2000 m).
