Plant	Up to 12′ (3.6 m) in height, often forming large groups. A single, smooth, hollow stem has purple dots or vertically oriented purple lines, becoming reddish or purple near the top.	Spotted Joe-Pye weed is 2–6′ (60–182 cm) in height. This plant can be distinguished from several close relatives by its deep purple or purple-spotted stem.	Plants are 3–7′ tall ⨉ 2–3′ wide (91–213 ⨉ 60–91 cm). Stems are rigid, round, and green.
Leaves	Lanceolate, dark green, in whorls of 3 to 5, with sharp teeth. Leaves are 3–11″ (8–28 cm) long.	Whorled, in groups of three to six. Each leaf is up to 9 ⨉ 2″ (22 ⨉ 5 cm). Leaves have coarse teeth, short petioles, and smell like vanilla when crushed.	Up to 6″ (15 cm) long and 3½″ (8.9 cm) wide occur in whorls of 3-5 around the stem. The leaves are lanceolate and finely toothed. Upper leaf surfaces are hairless; lower surfaces may be hairless of have fine hairs.
Flowers	Plants produce an array of several flowerheads. Each flowerhead has 4-7 pink-purple disc flowers about ¼″ (8.4 mm) long, but no ray flowers. Flowers appear from July to September. They may have a mild fragrance.	Individual flowers are very small, forming clusters 4–6″ (10–15 cm) across, that are pink or lavender in color. Each flow lacks ray florets, and 8-20 disc florets, looking a bit furry.	Dense domelike flower clusters up to 1½′ (45 cm) around are made up of closely spaced panicles. These in turn are packed with small flowers that are dull pink or mauve in color. They smell like vanilla. They appear from July to August.
Fruit	Bullet-shaped achenes are ⅛″ (3 mm) long, tipped with tufts of hairs.	Hairy achenes are wind-dispersed. They contain seeds 1/16–⅛″ (3–4 mm) long, and five-sided.	Bullet-shaped achenes with a small tufts of hair (pappi).

Habitats	Rich moist soils, such as floodplains and marshes, in forests and fields, in full to partial sun.	Sunny marshes, rich fens and swamps; as well as man-made moist expanses such as ditches, seepage areas and wet fields.	Low moist ground, wooded slopes, wet meadows and thickets and stream margins.
