This cactus is found only in northern Baja California Sur, Mexico.
Plants: Plants are light green to bluish gray, forming a single round or cylindrical stem 6½–8 ⨉ 2–3′ in diameter (2–2.5 m ⨉ 60–100 cm), with 15-30 prominent ribs. A single large central spine, 1½–4″ (4–10 cm) long and often curved, is surrounded by 7-9 radial spines up to 2″ (6 cm) long. Spines form almost a geodesic dome around the cactus.
Flowers: Funnel-shaped flowers span the range from deep red brown to red to yellow. They are up to 3″ (7.5 cm) long and 2½″ (7 cm) around.
Fruits: Oval-shaped fruits are bright yellow, and up to 1¾ ⨉ 1″ (5 ⨉ 3 cm). They contain black seeds that are 1/16″ (2 mm) in diameter.
Habitats: Desert scrubs, hillsides, rocky slopes and gravely rocky or sandy soils, elevations of up to 3937′ (1.2 km).
